I was asked a few times recently on how I got started with calligraphy, and thinking about it brings back memories. I can still picture the old Tracy back in 2017 learning how to write with the pointed nib and ink (very badly). In this fast paced digital world, I did not want to keep staring and scrolling on my phone in my spare time and I wanted to learn a new hobby (plus I did not have any friends living in a new city).
In late 2017, I took a beginners online class and bought a cheap starter pack of a Rhodia writing pad and standard plastic pen holder, Nikko G nib and a small jar of Sumi ink- just in case I did not enjoy calligraphy and did not have to waste much money. It was shipped from the USA as modern calligraphy was not very popular in the UK back then and I had no idea where to look for supplies. However, 7 years later I still have a passion for it!
It took me months to the learn the basics alongside my full time job. When they say calligraphy helps with your mental health, it really does based on my experience! I found that going slow and focusing on the spelling of the words helps me to slow down my mind and thoughts, and to be in the moment. If you want instant gratification, this skill is not for you!
I was practising on and off, I honestly was not consistent with learning as life happens and I had a full time job. Then, I wanted to find and create my own style- so I took Crooked Calligraphy’s advanced modern calligraphy course. I had to be patient with myself and to trust the process if I wanted to become better at it.
I think in 2020 when Covid-19 hit, that was when I was more confident in my skills. I was selling some greeting cards on Etsy and did a few online markets. After the pandemic was over, I participated in an actual market but sales were not that great. This was when I realised I did not like selling physical products at markets.
This piqued my interest in working at live events after seeing it on social media. It was hard to try and not compare with other people who were better than me, as I was not sure if I was ready. After taking a workshop and honing my skills and mindset, I did my first job as a live calligraphy event artist at Jo Malone in 2022 which was introduced through an agency. I was so nervous that my hand was shaking while I was writing on my first sample box! But after taking a few deep breaths and telling myself to get it together, I started to relax.
Since then, I have worked with a few brands and event planners. I have learnt so many things throughout the various onsite events that I have done. Mistakes were made along the way but it was, and still is, a major opportunity for growth.
But for now, with some exciting projects coming up, I am excited to see how the rest of this journey pans out!
